The Whistler Try-a-tri and KOS tris were great choices to do for our first tris!! My only regret is that while I was doing my first tri - Jacqueline and Stuart were doing theirs - so I couldn't really spectate, cheer, and take pictures. I didn't realize that Andrew was waiting to take video/pictures of my swim wave to start while J and S were racing so he missed most of their races too. Once I realized that he waiting for me I told him to go and watch the kids because they would likely be finished before my race even began since theirs was much shorter.
here I am with the kids arriving at the rec centre about 7:30 am! We drove up with SEVEN bikes on this van - only needed the three this morning though!
We set up our transitions and I tried to 'coach' the kids one last time on what to do at each one.
We got body marked - It was pretty funny when she tried to write Stuart's number on him - he is SOOO ticklish!! His numbers ended up being a little 'squiggly' LOL!
Stuart was chatting it up with some girls while he waited for his wave to start.
Delaney got ready with her sign that she made especially for the day!
And the finishers with their medals!!! Jacqueline did really well with her swim - she did her 100m in only 2:23 - which is actually only a little slower than my average/100m for my swims! Stuart got throught the swim 'any way he could' LOL! I felt bad that we didn't realize Stuart's seat was broken on his bike - every 20-30 seconds or so his seat would tip back and press on his fender which then pressed on his tire - he would have to get off his bike and readjust his seat only for it to happen a few seconds later! I am so proud of him for not giving up during the bike leg - that had to have been very frustrating! His bike time was WAY slower than he was capable of though as a result. Both the kids weren't super speedy on their runs - but they did nothing specific to train for this event - they just did it on a whim (and for Stuart it was because he got to miss a day of school LOL!). It was meant to be 'just for fun'. But Jacqueline 'got hooked' - she wants to do more - as well as Delaney wants to try some too (she was 1 week too young to participate in this one!).
Meanwhile my race was going on: here I am coming back to transition after the swim. It was set up kind of weird. People had their belongings outside of the door to the pool to 'get changed, etc' and then run to your bike (it was maybe a 200m run to the bikes?) I didn't realize that was the plan until after I had already set up my transition area so I had Andrew grab my bike shoes...but I realized I would be faster just running barefoot than running in clunky bike shoes so that is why I have them in my hand. I probably would have taken off my swim cap and goggles before now if my hands weren't already full!
This is after the bike leg - notice their are not too many bikes back on the rack yet! And this is even with me starting about 40 back in the staggered swim start!
Leaving transition to begin the run. It didn't take me long to figure out that I could NOT run and drink from a dixie cup at the same time! I stupidly did this race sockless even though I had not trained without socks before - and YES...I got nastly blisters by about 2km into the 4 km run!

entering the finish chute - my feet were KILLING me by this point!
At the finish with my medal! (notice my race number?!? lol - I was a bit disillusioned that my 14 year old 'got the joke'!).
I was so happy to have finished my first triathlon. I did much better than I had hoped. My only goal was to finish and not come last in my age group.
Final results were: 1:06:10 - 3/12 for age group - and 17/51 finishers overall.
